Balance

A sculptural experience

Art as Play/Play as Art

I created this sculpture alongside Maitri Paul, Akshay Shah, and Kristin Fahy for the Connections in Wood assignment for Sculpture I.

Our project centered on the theme of balance and it was so fun to see how we teetered from known to unknown as we all learned new processes, created jigs unique to our project, and shared our final project with the class (our classmates enjoying our sculpture at left).

I learned so much about translating my CAD files to CNC tool paths, using the many tools in the wood shop, and how many hands make light work.

Brainstorming

Our group started with a massive sketching session - keeping our minds open before aligning on the simple but daring plan to create a tilting surface that all four of us could sit on at once.

Process

To get a feel for scale, we laid out tape measures.

Cardboard models helped us visualize our design.

CAD allowed us to iterate on the curvature angle to get a better feel for the experience and aesthetics of our final piece.
